Nigerians Win More Medals at the Commonwealth Games
Nigerian para powerlifter Roland Ezuruike has won the country’s first gold medal of the Commonwealth Games.
Ezuruike took the top medal in the para powerlifting lightweight men category on Tuesday.
He lifted 224.3kg while countryman Paul Kehinde claimed the silver medal with a 219.9kg lift.
England’s Ali Jawad won the bronze with a lift of 182.7kg.
Ezuruike won a silver medal in the men’s 72kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
On September 9, 2016, he set a new Paralympics record in the men’s 54kg category after lifting 200kg at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Moreso, Esther Oyema, Nigerian Female lightweight para powerlifter, broke the world record to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Oyema set a new world record for the women’s under 50kg class with a 141.6kg lift.
Lucy Ejike, another Nigerian, claimed the silver medal for Nigeria with a lift of 131.4kg.
Zoe Newson of England won the bronze with a lift of 106.1 kg.
So far, Nigeria has won medals in table tennis, shot put, and now para powerlifting.
D’Tigers, the country’s male basketball team, lost to Australia on Monday. They are bottom of their group and expected to face Scotland next. (Source:thecable.ng)
